Wastewater Treatment Plant
Sludge Dewatering Improvements
Chief
Operator: Jim Vrooman
Engineer: O’Brien & Gere
Engineers, Inc.
Project Summary:
In
the early 1980s, the Village upgraded its sludge handling facilities. Several
sludge
dewatering
technologies were evaluated. A belt filter press was chosen as the most cost
effective equipment for the Village. Once installed, the manpower and
maintenance
requirements
for the dewatering operation were reduced from five days per week to one
day
per week. The press also produces a dryer cake (28% solids by weight) than the
previous vacuum filter cake. The Village stabilizes the sludge with lime prior
to ultimate disposal.
Our
special thanks to Jim Vrooman, Chief Operator. Jim is responsible for the
successful operation of the dewatering equipment. The belt press and related
items have been operating reliably for over 15 years.
