Wastewater Treatment Plant
Sludge Dewatering Improvements
Chief
Operator: Keneck Skibinski
Engineer: Stearns & Wheler, LLC
Project Summary:
For
many years, the Herkimer County facility was challenged with the high
maintenance costs related to the use of their outdated dewatering equipment.
The old plate and frame presses
required the use of a lime slurry and ferric chloride system. These chemical
feed systems were expensive to operate and maintain. The 1990 treatment
facility upgrade included a new belt dewatering press. A dry lime system is now
used for sludge stabilization. This has
substantially reduced the maintenance for the chemical handling equipment.
Average cake dryness is 26 percent by weight.
Ken
Skibinski is responsible for the management of the dewatering system. For those
who
know Ken, he has an unparalleled enthusiasm for his work. Ken’s pride is
evident in the dewatering system, as he and his staff manage to keep the
facility clean and safe at all times.
